Root canal therapy refers to the process by which a dentist treats the inner aspects of a tooth, specifically the area inside a tooth that is occupied by pulp tissue – partially composed of nerves. Each tooth’s nerve enters the tooth at the tip of its roots. From there, the nerve runs through the center of the root in small “root canals.” A root canal is a procedure performed by a dentist or endodontist to save damaged or dead pulp in the root canal of the tooth. Treatment usually involves one to three appointments.
